Boone County Denies $35M Rezoning Plan

by EnRoute Team on December 8, 2009

The Boone County Commissioners on Monday night voted 3-0 against a rezoning plan that would’ve allowed the construction of a $35 million backup power-grid control center in a rural area north of Lebanon.

Carmel-based Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, which governs electric power distribution in 13 states and the Canadian province of Manitoba, requested the change of zoning for 17 acres of farm land from agriculture to professional business.

All three commissioners said they liked the project, but turned down the zoning request because of the location, which they said should remain agricultural.

A Midwest ISO spokesman said the agency would continue to scout for sites in the Indianapolis area to build the facility, which would take over operations for Midwest ISO’s main center in Carmel if it goes down for any reason.
